December 31, 2007- Dana's New
Years Eve Buck
After checking the weather report for Kansas,
we decided to head back to camp on December 27th. A big winter storm
had just pushed through and we were hoping the deer would be up on
their feet in search of food. After the long 14 hour truck ride, we
got settled in at the camp and came up with a game plan.
There was only 4 days remaining in the Kansas bow season so we did
our best to set up some motion cameras and find some deer sign. We
ended up setting the Double Bull blind up in the “tree belt” amongst
some cedar trees. Our Primos Double Bull Blind worked out great for
the location we chose and it also kept us out of the freezing Kansas
wind. On our first couple of hunts we must have seen 20 to 30 deer,
but no mature bucks. We knew if we did not run out of time the right
one would eventually show up.
Finally, on New Years Eve he did. Our light was slowly fading and I
did not want to go home empty handed. Chad and I had just said if
something does not come out in the next few minutes our hunt is
over. Out of nowhere a nice buck jumps the barbwire fence 25 yards
from our blind and begins to head our way. Chad got the camera on
him and I drew my bow back waiting for him to take just a couple
more steps. However, the deer stopped and took a few steps back and
walked around a cedar bush. I had to let my bow down. The deer stood
facing us at 20 yards for about a minute or two before turning
broadside and offering me a shot. I drew back once again and let one
fly.
I knew I made a good shot on the deer. We
could actually hear the arrow make a clean pass. We were so pumped.
We gave it a few minutes and then got out and found my bloody arrow
and quickly found a nice blood trail. The tracking job was short. He
was lying about 50 yards from the blind on the fencerow. After many
hours behind my Mathews bow and the camera, I finally had a buck
down. We could not have asked for a better New Years Eve.
